    Maybe Kellaway Motorcycles, 168 Kellaway Avenue, Avon, Bristol, BS67YQ ? They were once MZ dealers and had credits in a Haynes ETZ manual I once had. I have no idea if they retain any interest in maintaining MZ’s or similar, equally I have no experience of them.

    Re. the comment about old stock rubber items, I have experienced problems of old rubber on 500R airbox side rubbers from both a UK supplier and a German supplier, maybe of the same origin? They were so bad they were cracked half depth when supplied new.

    I sometimes wonder about what we pay in the UK for our bike parts. I’ve just looked on MikuniOz website (Australian) and see they are selling Mikuni VM30 carburettors for just 154 Australian dollars or £85. They also list lots of adapters, cables, twist grips etc. Now I know you can’t buy advice on eBay but it does seem we are living in what is commonly known as “rip off Britain”. As far as I understand it anything imported valued at less than £135 will not attract any import tax etc you just need to pay the carriage but I stand to be corrected. Incidentally, my own experiences with Allen’s have been good doing it the old fashioned way with a phone call.

    My problem is a Chinese copy of the Bing Carb which I think is probably junk. If I’m buying a new carb I want to spend my money well, either on a genuine Bing or the ever popular Mikuni VM. I was fishing for the experience of someone who has fitted a Mikuni.

    And just to prove the point the bike has been standing a few months with a drained carb and having filled the carb it started first push of the button.

    Thanks to all contributers to my original post. Several of you have agreed that draining the carb is one solution and this concurs with discussions I’ve had elsewhere. But why? What changes to fuel in the carb which doesn’t change when it stands for the same period in the tank? I can’t fathom it out and while I happily accept the solution I would like to understand the chemistry of it. And why only on the Skorpion?

    It seems Matthew is one end of the arguement and I would agree that 33 or 30 to one is not the issue. When you start thinking about 40:1 then it is an issue. An arguement on the Jawa club site is that 40:1 was introduced as a reaction to emissions laws but it is a significant risk to the survival of the crankshaft bearings. Personally I feel a ratio of 33:1 using a branded two stroke oil is a sensible compromise. It won’t break the bank any you can reasonably expect good lubrication of the engine bottom end.

    I am really a MZ 4 stroke man (Rt125, Skorpion and 500R) but am now renovating a Jawa TS350 and hear the same discussion in the Jawa community. The oil in the fuel is the primary insurance against seizure. Why would anybody want to risk a low oil mixture ratio on the basis that the modern oil is better than oils of yesteryear? What is the driver to reduce the oil ratio? Cost? It’s peanuts. I would suggest the best ratio is the most oil that the engine will run happily on without affecting performance or reliability such as oiled plugs. Why tempt the possibility of seizure ? I don’t understand why anybody would want to take a risk. In any case the smell of a two stroke bike is something to be savoured, the smell of two strokes on the race circuits is one of those things like rain on a summer’s day, onions frying in the burger van, hawthorn blossom and the extract fan from your local Chinese take away that should be treasured !! As the club T Shirt says “I love the smell of two stroke in the morning” and as I read elsewhere “would you underfill your gearbox on the basis that modern oils are better than old oils”?
