Thanks again Rob, is there a separate drain plug for the clutch compartment?

Hi Rob, Thank you. Thats what i thought. The gear box oil was low and dirty when i changed it and although i measured out the recommended oil volume in the Haynes manual it didnt seem to run out of the level check hole, even when i added a little bit more. I resisted the temptation to put more in and rode it instead- the gear change was much smoother and clutch less (bit still a bit) dragging when cold but after a good run, oil was visibly seeping out from behind the shaft though once the bike had cooled, the seepage seemed to stop. I am tempted to just keep using for now and top up as required and deal with it when it comes off the rode this winter. Any other thoughts gratefully received!

Have got an Italian made one with a metal rather than plastic spigot and a glass rather than plastic bowl and not too expensive so back on the road tomorrow without the risk (well, a reduced risk anyway..) of going up in flames.

    Thanks Julian,

The vinegar treatment got a lot of gunk out of the tank (it hadn’t been used for a while) and got me going but it will definitely need treatment going forward so many thanks for the tip- i will check out the youtube vids!
Have been running through my list of jobs and now have the 150 running and had a couple of short (5-10 mile) trips out (between the showers) to see how things go- the carb needs some sorting and i now have a small drip of gearbox oil; i suspect the level check screw should have a aluminium washer behind it?

    Thanks again,

    John

In the end i used clear distilled vinegar + nuts and bolts followed by water rinse, a wash through with bi-carb solution, dried with a hair drier and ran a bit of fuel/ engine oil mix into the tank and shook it about. Left the vinegar in for about a day, and boy did some rust and gunk come out! its still not perfect but its a huge improvement! 🙂

Thanks Andy, much appreciated. Is there any kind of permanent coating treatment that can be applied to the inside? A new fuel tap and filter seem to have been fitted to the tank- would it make sense to remove (and block the hole temporarily) before the nuts and bolts/ fuel treatment? Thanks again, really looking forward to getting out and about on my new (to me) bike!
