InactiveI’ll kick this forum off with a short story about how I came into MZs and what I bought along with plans for the project. I won’t go into too much detail as I’ve sent a lengthy story on the same subject to the Magazine Editor so it would be unfriendly to steal his thunder.
I met Derek the Editor at a local steam rally and although his MZ was without doubt the scruffiest bike there, I took a shine to her. Fitted with knobbly tyres and a raised exhaust, I was told of her trials background. So I began to read up about MZs and within a fortnight or so has bought a batch of bike parts which included one ETZ250 rolling chassis, two frames, five engines, five log books and about a ton of ETZ spares for a paltry sum of money.
My plan is to build an enduro bike (OK, a ‘green laner’) with knobbly tyres, high exhaust, high handlebars and a single seat. I am off on a solo ride around the Baltic in a month’s time so I shalln’t commence the build until I get back but the other evening I bought a pair of Michelin Trials Competition tyres of the appropriate sizes – 2.75×21 and 4.0×18 – for £30. I’m looking forward to it!

InactiveJust some thoughts on what colours to paint the project. I rather like the colour scheme of the works MZ 250 racer from the 1960s as ridden in GPs by the likes of Ernst Degner, Alan Shepherd and Derek Woodman. Primarily all silver with a dark green ‘patch’ on either side of the petrol tank. A friend in Germany is contacting an MZ restorer to obtain the exact RAL colour code for the dark green.
I plan to fit plastic enduro/trials mudguards in silver to replace the steel originals. With a 21″ front tyre, the front one wouldn’t have fitted anyway.
I don’t plan to commence the build until about August when I return from my solo Round-the-Baltic bike ride on my Beemer.

InactiveRight, my German friend has spoken to the MZ restorer in his country and the exact colour used for the side panels and top half of the fairing on the works MZ 250cc racers is……….RAL 6005 Moss Green.

InactiveWhilst I’ve decided not to begin the enduro/trailbike conversion until I return from my Baltic ride, I couldn’t help offering up one of my numerous MZ seats to see just how much I would need to shorten one. I want a short single seat roughly half the length of the standard dual seat. By undoing the numerous metal tags under the seat pan edge, the cover easily came off and the foam was also able to be removed even though it was stuck down. I’ve decided to remove a section from the middle of the seat pan, about 10″ long, and once welded together this will allow the front of the seat’s attachment points and the hump over the electrics to remain plus the curved rear end. I see that one of my spare seats has a tin covered compartment too but won’t be using that. I shall get the pan cut and welded, and recovered on my return. Interesting to note that the seat pan is passivated rather than painted.
