MemberThanks for the advice, Steve. Unfortunately I don’t have access to spray equipment so I was wondering if cellulose in a spray can (obtainable on ebay) might do the trick? I have only recently returned to bikes after a gap of some 10 years when all this Health and Safety sh*t seems to have crept up on us, but in the good old days of the ’60’s and ’70’s I remember spraying lots of tanks and never having any bother with petrol stripping the paint afterwards.

MemberHello, a mate of mine used Carplan/Tetroseal aerosol paint on the tank of his BSA Starfire, any petrol that spills on it can cause slight discoloration but it polishes out, I use a spray gun with a synthetic enamel (Tractol) on my bikes after a couple of weeks to cure petrol will not touch it. Cheers Steve.

MemberI run my ETZ engine on 34:1. That is 34ml of fuel to 1 of 2 stroke oil. That equates to 145ml of oil in 5 litres. Ian is correct about leaner mixes, but I run the engine fairly hard, so I run it rich.

MemberThanks Peter, your reply to my question is exactly the sort of advice I need. I might get myself a current tester as they are only £10 at Wickes but first I need a bracket for my dial gauge as its 10 or more years since I last set points (other bike, Beemer is CDI) and although I found the gauge I can’t find the bracket!

MemberI have been running mz’s for years initially ts250 at 50:1 but did have both crank and main bearing failure at different times
For the last 3 years I have run a ts125 I have a wilf green owners handbook that says with the later motors from about 75/76 50:1 is right after being run in at 33:1
I use the cheapest 2t availible (carplan @ 3.50 ish per litre ) at 33:1 and it runs sweet as a nut
Remember 50:1 is 2% oil and 33/1 is 3% thats only 1% less petrol (bugger all difference) use the good petrol the higher octane will outwiegh the less petrol
The measure in the tank is for 1 imperial gallon at 50:1 or 4.5 litres so on that basis 1 measure for 3 litres or 2 for 6 litres or even 3 measures for 9 litres will give you 33:1 🙂 4 scoops to a full tank from reserve will give you somthing like 30:1 and it will still run sweet
Good luck and enjoy your bike‘AAA Dummy
MemberSounds like the selector has slipped off the geartrain its a funny thing that moves both top centr gears and bottom centre gears (2nd and 3rd gear only) you can suss it out with all the gears in the left case
The neat thing is that each gear selects in turn along the shaft from left to right
After the cases are together in top gear I adjust the selector rod (directly below the clucth) screwing clockwise until third and fourth are just touching then back off about 1/4 turn the gears should work ok then
Remember the clutch centre locknut should be tightened as it holds the top shaft in position
Hope this helps‘AAA Dummy
MemberThanks Jon nwshuttleworth@gmail.com
I’ve actually got the carb in bits all over my bench at the moment as I discovered the adjuster to the choke cable was broken off and obviously this isn’t helping the non-starting situation!
Look forward to hearing from you

MemberHi Jon, I wonder if you would be so kind as to tell me what this spark tool is called so I can get one? At the moment I have stripped the carb as I noticed the choke mechanism is worn and sticks badly. The adjuster is also broken so I will have to replace that.

MemberI put in a brand new plug after the one in there got wetted, but still not even a hint of starting. How do I tell if the spark might be failing under compression? I once witnessed a rally mechanic working on a Lotus Cortina engine with a misfire hold the plug with one hand and stick a finger from the other hand up the HT cap – ‘that ones firing OK’ was all he said but he was jerking about like the Policeman in Punch and Judy!

MemberHello Andrew
I too have just bought a TS125 for ‘tinkering’ and i found the bars touch the tank. There are two stops cast as part of the bottom yoke which should hit a lug which is part of the frame and comes out of the headstock straight down just behind the lower headrace. I suspect this has been broken off on yours. Mine had worn badly so I have had to drill the aluminium castings and put a 3mm bolt through with the hex head forming the actual stop against the steel lug and thereby giving some clearance to the bars against the tank. I am afraid I can’t do a photo as I’m new on here and I can’t seem to insert photos into my posts!!-

MemberThank you Ian and Markus, both answers make sense so I will try 50:1 and see how it goes. I’m waiting for a new petcock from the MZ Shop to arrive and I should be ready to fire ‘er up. The previous owner had left the TS in the street for 6 months without starting it up and the inside of the tank had a lot of rust in it, the zinc body of the petrol tap also having being badly attacked; thats unfortunately what we increasingly face as the % of bioethanol they are now polluting our petrol with goes up!

MemberThanks very much for the replies – I don’t know whether my 1986 TS125 has a roller or plain bush little end as I haven’t taken it to bits yet. As a matter of interest wouldn’t 33/1 cause plug oiling in a 50/1 engine?

MemberI run my mz’s at 33 to 1 that means 1 cap per 3 litres of fuel. 6 litres =2caps . 9 litres = 3 caps works well for me
Also I use cheap carplan 2 stroke oil (three litres for a tenna from gsf)
Hope that helps someone

MemberI had two ts 250s in the 80’s and put a 18″ honda tls wheel in and the improvement was phenomenal. If I remember you use the sme spindle but swap the fork legs round and I made a little spacer to centralise the wheel .
