      Hello Forum,

I have recently purchased a 1986 ETZ 250 as a restoration project. I do not have the key to the steering lock and want to fit a new one. What is the best way of getting the old barrel out to do this? I would be very grateful for any advice before I resort to drilling it out as I don’t want to damage the frame in the process.

      Many thanks,

      Craig.

Probably not the best way of doing it other than the drill but on a couple of my TS 250/1’s I resorted to knocking it back through the barrel shaft using a punch and hammer!!!!! On mine I got the plate cover off first levering the pin out the barrel, can be knocked back with little damage. I have no idea if the ETZ is different from the TS’s so if I were you I would await other replies (just letting you know of my experiences) or resort to the drill ( I have done that too)!

      Regards Stuart

      Hello Stuart,

Many thanks for your reply. I wasn’t able to knock it out with a punch alone so resorted to the drill! I carefully drilled a pilot hole in the barrel and gradually increased the drill size until the barrel dropped out. I then knocked the shaft out with a punch, I was surprised how easy this was in the end.

      Thanks again,

      Craig.
