I know PHPBB has this facility baked into it. and it seems to be the platform of choice for most of the bike forums i visit. Im sure there is umpteen suitable wordpress plugins, a couple spring to mind, front end pm, and private messages for wordpress. Im a developer and designer by profession, so if theres anything i can do to help.
