The MZRCs Classics officer has amassed a wealth of information and factory records to assist in dating any MZ which is in need of an identity. Of course the machine/frame/engine must be of a known /provenance, and some proof may be needed to prove it has not been stolen.
The Club is able to provide a certificate of age and authenticity, (a Dating Certificate) acceptable to the DVLA, to assist in getting an abandoned MZ (and often associated manufacturer’s) motorcycles back on the road.
In allocating a registration mark to a rebuilt vehicle, the DVLA’s main interest is to establish whether or not the vehicle is newly constructed with no previously registered identity (in the present form). Vehicles that have been substantially rebuilt usually need to be examined by one of the DVLA local offices but often, in the case of classic MZs, a Club Dating Certificate will often suffice.
Remember that the motorcycle must use an unmodified frame (original or new) and two other major components from the original vehicle; forks, wheels and engine or gear box. If a second-hand frame is used the vehicle must pass a motorcycle single vehicle approval (MSVA) test after which a 'Q' prefix registration number will be allocated.
Here is some useful information on the DFT/DVLA website on registering your old vehicle.
Contact the Club’s Classics Officer for advice as to how you can get your rebuilt MZ back on the road or get it allocated Historic Taxation Class if registered before 1 January 1973.
The procedure for redating is here.
