Machine Dating

The MZRC can supply dating certificates, acceptable to DVLA, which can assist in registering an imported machine or (if eligible) getting historic status or age related number plate.
The procedure, which is written in stone, is below.
Please don’t tell us that the Itchyfannymotoclub do it differently, because we don’t want to know. This is how MZRC does it!
Please Contact the Club’s Classics Officer with any queries

Procedure to Obtain a Dating Certificate for an IFA Group Motorcycle or Scooter.

 Such a certificate is required if change of Taxation Class to Historic Vehicle is sought for machines already registered.

  • Classics Officer states procedure including costs to enquirer (members only with an expense allowance for Club inspecting officers).
  • Classics Officer contacts Membership Secretary to obtain membership number for our records.
  • Classics Officer contacts nearest Club officer (often Section Rep) to ask if they can help with a dating inspection.  Classics Officer can inspect if nearest.
  • Inspection fee is collected by the inspecting officer prior to the date of the inspection.
  • Club inspecting officer establishes that these conditions are met:
    • photo of frame number;
    • photo of makers plate (vehicle identification plate) if available;
    • photo of engine number (for information to build our database)
    • general photos of bike;
    • examination of any documents already held (e.g. German log book, purchasing receipts, V5 – where historic taxation class is sought, MoT certificates);
    • satisfaction that the bike is ready to take an MoT test.
  • Inspecting officer provides a written report (e.g. e-mail, Word) including all the above details and a brief general statement of machine condition (e.g. as applicable: machine originality, confirmation of model, restored, partially restored, original, mainly original, used daily, good condition allowing for age, all must be ready for the road!).  Machines do not need to be pristine, but must be ready for the road!
  • Classics Officer compares the data provided in the inspection report against factory data and issues the dating certificate.
  • Machine owner takes the dating certificate to their local DVLA office and obtains the appropriate V5.  Those with road legal machines seeking Historic Taxation should also present insurance, MoT and existing V5.  A revised MoT certificate will also be issued.

Just to clarify, a machine may be awarded Historic (free) taxation class if it was manufactured before 1 January 1973. NB, date of manufacture, not registration date. DVLA guidelines are here.

In addition, any such vehicle, made pre Jan 1973, may also use white on black or silver on black number plates. Number plate data is here.
